The Trico Buffet & Early Morning Streamer Fishing

 

As fall approaches, the cooler nights come sooner than expected and the big predatory trout have longer nights to prowl. With spawning season right around the corner, the males are noticeably more aggressive.  This makes for some fantastic streamer fishing in the early morning.

The warm daytime temperatures contrast the night’s and keep the trico hatch plentiful and productive. On Spruce Creek the trico hatch is starting at about 9am and lasting until almost noon. Be sure to start with your regular patterns and then fish the spinner fall as the hatch winds down. Tricos are a staple for fall Pennsylvania fly fishing.

We’ve started to see one or two rainbow trout on redds. Do your best to avoid fishing for or disturbing these fish, especially in wild trout waters. Trout that are not on the redds begin to feed on egg flies and other “trout candy” during this time of year. Nymphing with an egg fly can be very productive:
