August Fly Fishing on Spruce Creek
Big Dries, Tiny Dries, and Streamer Flies
All over the county the Tricos are hatching and Spruce Creek is no exception. It’s an exciting hatch to witness as swarms of tiny insects congregate in the air. First the birds begin to gorge themselves, and soon the trout will join them. It can also be a frustrating hatch, especially on pressured waters where presentation and fly selection become crucial. Always be prepared with at least 3 different trico patterns – the male (black body), the female (white/cream body), and the spinner fall.
If tiny dry flies are not your thing, this is also a great time of year for fishing with a beetle fly, a large ant, stimulator patterns, hoppers, and even large stoneflies. Trout are opportunistic feeders and a large morsel is hard to resist.
On Sunday we had a period of heavy rain in a short amount time. The creek rose and became murky, and it didn’t take long for the predatory trout to start hitting streamers. On a smaller stream, both downstream and upstream approaches can be effective when using a streamer.
The large picture above is of our friend, Dave, holding up a hog rainbow at dawn. We’ve decided to name that stretch of water “Dave’s Run” because he seems to catch a hog every time he fishes there. Nice fish, Dave!
