Anticipating the Hatch: 3 of the Best April Hatches…

 

April hosts some of the most impressive hatches as late winter yields to Spring. Cold and nutrient-rich streams, such as Spruce Creek, experience their first major hatch events of the year in April. Several types of mayflies make their first appearances in April, including the species listed below:

 

3. The Blue Quill

This name, as with many fly imitations, derives from the featured body material used when tying the imitation. The Blue Quill hatch is tremendous on Spruce Creek; countless bugs litter the surface for hungry trout.

 

2. Hendricksons

The Hendrickson hatch is a personal favorite of mine because of the behavior of the insects. They tend to reach the surface and ride the current a long time before taking to the skies. These long rides create abundant feeding opportunities for trout and extended drift productivity for anglers.

 

1. Grannom Caddis

This hatch is legendary on Spruce Creek. For only a few days the water and skies are absolutely crammed with thousands and thousands of caddis flies. The trout take advantage of the plentiful food and eat continuously. It is a spectacular experience!  Most Elk Hair Caddis patterns will imitate this dry fly appropriately.
