Smallmouth Bass on the Fly

Feisty Bass on Otsego Lake

Once you get hooked on streamer fishing, it’s hard to resist the temptation to tie on one. There’s something about the ferocious strikes that streamers incur – it’s like watching a horror/thriller movie and you never know when that monster is going to pop out and scare the hell out of you.

While, for me, 95% of dry fly fishing involves targeting trout, streamer fishing is effective on several species of fish and in several different water environments (rivers, lakes, ponds, ocean, etc). Targeting smallmouth bass with streamers, on Otsego Lake, is a blast! These fish absolutely smash your fly and fight like a trout twice their size.

Trout Haven has developed an array of deadly streamer patterns, available online in our flyshop. These streamers are intended to imitate immature brown trout, but they are equally effective at catching both trout and bass (and other species).

Sometimes the simple patterns are the most effective – Trout Haven’s streamers use 2 colors and a hint of flash. They will definitely get the job done!
